Shanti Nachtergaele
Double bassist and violone player Shanti Nachtergaele specializes in historically informed performances of music from the 16th through 19th centuries. She is a member of Rosa Barocca (Calgary) and has performed with ensembles including the Arion Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Toronto), American Bach Soloists (San Francisco), and Accordes! (Oxford), as well as teaching at the Festival de Música de Santa Catarina (Brazil). She studied with Donovan Stokes, Maggie Urquhart, and Rob Nairn, and holds degrees from Shenandoah Conservatory, the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, and The Pennsylvania State University. Shanti is currently pursuing a PhD in musicology at McGill University, and her research focuses on the history of the double bass and its techniques and performance practices. She has published articles in Early Music, Music and the Moving Image, and the Online Journal of Bass Research and is the recipient of a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (2018–2021) and the International Society of Bassists Special Recognition Award for Scholarship (2021).
